So I haven’t had time to read much recently because I’ve been super busy this past week and a half, but right when I got a few minutes of breathing time, I continued on the RIVER OF TIME series by Lisa Tawn Bergren, getting to the second and third books–CASCADE AND TORRENT.
If you haven’t heard, I read a book called Waterfall, which is the first in the RIVER OF TIME series. I hadn’t really been expecting as much as I got, and I was extremely pleasantly surprised. ROT is about two girls named Lia and Gabi. They’re stuck on Italian archaeological ruins for their summer because of their mom’s job. That is, until Gabi and Lia go exploring into one of the ruins and make a mistake that ends them up in fourteenth century Italy, stuck in a battle between two fierce opposing forces.
That’s pretty much the blurb for WATERFALL. As they live through the different fights and trials, they try desperately to get back to their own time–only to find out that they’ve fallen in love with the time, the land and the people, but more importantly, two guys named Marcello and Luca.
Things heat up as foes are vanquished but new ones keep popping up. And that’s the least of their worries, with the plague on the way and traitors in their midst.
To be honest, I was preparing myself for CASCADE to be a complete disappointment after WATERFALL. But not so. Same thing with TORRENT. Lisa T. Bergren is not to be underestimated, folks. The action, adventure, history, Christian fiction elements and romance were all pitch-perfect. I loved the twists and turns to the plot and while I do have to admit I skimmed a few pages, CASCADE and TORRENT were extremely satisfying.
And then there’s Gabi and Lia. I was really impressed with how much they grew throughout the course of these two books, especially Gabi. I was wondering how things were going to work between Marcello and Gabi because of his strong connection to God and her “I believe in a big guy, not sure who though…” That’s a sensitive subject, and Bergren pulled it off in a way that was realistic and satisfying. I was glad the way it ended up.
The next books in the series are two novellas called BOURNE and TRIBUTARY. BOURNE and TRIBUTARY pick up after each other, starting from right after TORRENT. They chronicle the smaller (but not any less important) events in the character’s lives and tie up certain ideas in those two books, so I’m really looking forward to them. Of course, and then there’s DELUGE, the final book in the series! I’m a little sad that’s ending though…. 4 stars for CASCADE and TORRENT!
