So first off, I just want to say–MATTHEW TURNER IS AWESOME. I LOVE this book. But he’s also awesome because he’s hosting an amazing launch giveaway with more than 50 prizes available to win! You can find out about the prizes and giveaway here!
But back to the book.
The first time I heard about this story–honestly, I laughed. Mostly because the concept reminded me somewhat of the movie 50/50 and let’s face it, parts of that movie were pretty entertaining.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Anna Kendrick are great.
I guess one of the things I admired about this book the most is the care that seemed to go into it. Turner has clearly researched this subject in great depth and tried to portray it realistically through his writing–taking every measure to make everything go the right way, which is really important and meant a lot to me as I savored every minute of this book.
Most importantly to this story, the characters seem real. For what I didn’t see in some of the minor characters at times, Turner makes up for in Dante–the main character of TICK TO THE TOCK. Dante always looks out for his friends and while he is very dependent on them, they are very dependent on him as well. They often find themselves ensnared in the situations that they cannot control and turn to each other very well as a support group. Dante definitely had a strong voice as a character and as this is a character-based story, I think Turner did a remarkable job of explaining everyone’s situation and their outlook on it.
The dialogue is easy to read and the pace has a good feel to it. Somewhat that of a slice of life anime, but also the mixed in contemporary feel with a hint of adventure to make TICK TO THE TOCK a real ride of a contemporary novel. While it did have a slow beginning for me and I had hoped that some of the characters would make a stronger appearance, I still really enjoyed this novel and hope to see more from Matthew Turner. I will definitely be on the lookout for a copy of BEYOND PARALLEL. This is refreshing, fun and heartbreaking while heartwarming NA novel.
