The Mondays Musts is a feature by Jessica @ Lovin’ los Libros! Every Monday, you post about your must read, must listen and must see. Every week, I pick my musts based on a certain theme, which is expressed by one word that’s used within the post. The theme for last week’s picks was tribute.
The Fault in Our Stars is one of those books that I couldn’t review when I first read it. I never knew what to say or how to begin critiquing it. I’ll get to a throwback review here soon, but for now I’ll admit to the easiest dig at it–its flowery writing.
Yes, TFIOS is melodramatic. We all know this. It can be ridiculous, and it raises serious questions about romanticizing the extremely not-funny and not-romantic issue that is cancer. But TFIOS is still one of my favorite novels, and I would argue that its issues are also its strengths.
Green has convinced us to fall for these two very smart, very ridiculous, very funny characters. He coaxes us out of the shallow side of caring, the “oh yeah, cancer, it’s terrible”, and throws us out into the deep end of the pain that demands to be felt.
The writing is dreamy, but that doesn’t make it any less real or any less brilliant. There are some truly worthwhile observations scattered throughout TFIOS, and to anyone who still has reservations against this book–I would ask you to set down your preconceptions and give this story a try.
Here it is, my first favorite song of 2017! It’ll most likely be replaced, but it’s officially kicked off my year in music. I’ve heard a little bit from Gallant before, but I never loved his voice until I heard Cave Me In. I actually watched the teaser for Tablo and fell in love with the flow of the song. I’ve never been the biggest fan of Eric Nam, but this song is slowly convincing me to give him more of a chance.
Technically a Must Listen as well, but his videos are beautifully shot and his channel is well worth checking out. sleightlymusical is one of the few channels that I regularly keep up with and am subscribed to. The guy who runs it, Albert Chang, is a graduate of one of my dream schools, and he does videos mainly on music and card tricks. He doesn’t post very often, but I always enjoy it when he does.
If you did a Monday Musts, link it below and I’ll check it out!
