It’s Top Ten Tuesday! Top Ten Tuesday is a feature hosted on Tuesdays by The Broke and the Bookish. The theme for today is music I’ve been listening to lately. This is a monthly feature done in TTT format. The first five are non-Korean, the last five are Korean.
Sweet Dreams | BØRNS
Normally, Sweet Dreams wouldn’t be my kind of music. It has its flaws: it’s disjointed and almost has one too many transitions. In spite of that, I was introduced to this one by a friend and came to enjoy it, and it’s been on repeat for a few weeks now.
Back to Black | Amy Winehouse
November’s been a month for exploring new genres and rediscovering songs that I didn’t pay much attention to before. Of the latter, my favorite’s Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black. Her voice is so great, and it interacts perfectly with the music in a way that I didn’t feel in Valerie. I’m also really liking Madonna’s Like a Prayer and the remastered version of The Beatles’ While My Guitar Gently Weeps.
Everything Has Changed | Taylor Swift ft. Ed Sheeran
With the release of Look What You Made Me Do, I went on a binge listen of her songs that I grew up and loved despite disapproving of her methods of getting inspiration for her songs. Everything Has Changed was my favorite out of all her music for its sweetness and sense of discovery instead of regret and revenge. It’s a great first love kind of song, and the music video is pretty great too :’)
Havana | Camila Cabello ft. Young Thug
It’s been the trend that, once a school year, I’ll find a song on the mainstream pop radio that I really love, and I think Havana is the one. That means either the rest of the year is looking pretty bleak, or this’ll be a great year for radio music. Regardless, I’m enjoying it a lot right now. There are a few things that should bother me but don’t, like the slurring of the words in the chorus or the repeated motif throughout the song. The composition of the song hit just right in every way, and while I wasn’t the hugest fan of the rap, Havana would be dull without it.
Uncover | Zara Larsson
I was introduced to this song because of YG’s survival show MixNine. One of the contestants that I like, Kim Young Seo, performed it as her solo vocal performance on episode 2. I actually enjoy her voice with it better, but I like the original with Zara as well.
Just Dance | Rosé, Millenium
I like all versions of this song, but by far my favorite is the demo version by Rosé and Raesung (Millenium). Their voices make the song distinctive, fun, and catchy (though the dance in the officially released video was part of what made me really like the song in the first place). I also love that Raesung helped to produce the song, and I’m excited for what the next generation of YG trainees have to offer.
When We Were Two | Urban Zakapa
Urban Zakapa! I’ve been continuing to explore the Korean indie scene, and Urban Zakapa is consistently hitting the right notes for me. I love the heart and soul to their lyrics, voices, music, and videos. It comes together perfectly, creating songs that are emotional and well-balanced.
Eyes, Nose, Lips | Tablo, Taeyang
Tablo has endeared himself so much to me in the past year or so, and I’ve enjoyed the journey of going back through Epik High’s past albums and music to get to know them as a group. I almost didn’t pay attention to his cover of Taeyang’s Eyes, Nose, Lips, but the song perfectly comes together at the end when Taeyang comes in and they’re rapping/singing in unison. I wish all the best for Tablo and Epik High, and I’m glad that they’re continuing to do well.
Cactus | A.C.E
A.C.E debuted and came out with this video right around the time that I was most into 1Million and Koosung Jung, so I was unknowingly there at the beginning as a fan of this group. Cactus stayed on my playlist for about three months before I decided it was too electronic for me and deleted it, but I’ve since come back to it because of Seyoon, Donghun, and Byeongwan’s participation in MixNine. At this point, Byeongwan’s my favorite MixNine boy.
But looking past all these survival shows to the future, I really hope that A.C.E will see more resources and success in the future. They’re such talented and fun guys, but I hope that their music style will change up a little bit while they’re away. We’ll see how it turns out.
마음의 마술 (The Magic of Mind) | Shin Jae
Love Shin Jae’s voice in this + the lyrics. Such a pleasantly sweet, romantic song ^-^ I’m finding that the OSTs for dramas are getting increasingly unique in what they can sound like. Before, they seemed to meld together, but I’ve been having fun lately exploring what else is coming out.
